MIC-ROB BIO
As hip hop find’s itself struggling with its own identity, fans are very likely to be blinded by the shine of Mic-Rob (pronounced Mike Rob), Reno Nevada’s new son of hip hop. Though a hard worker, the allure of working a nine to five continues to lose the battle to holding microphones and sending messages through music. So hip hop, meet your destiny.
Within its half decade, Mic-Rob has caught on expediently. While many new talents strayed towards cookie cutter music that trades quantity for quality, Mic originally from Los Angeles emulated talents, such as Slum Village, Nas and even The Dogg Pound in slow-crafted, conceptual music. In mid-2002 Mic linked up with a group of local emcees to form “The Perfick Strangers”. From 2002 to 2004 the group opened for acts such as Tone Loc, Bone thugs n Harmony, Fabolous, Digital Underground, and many more, often stealing the show. As time wore on Mic decided he would stem out from a group to pursue his solo career. In 2005 Mic began working on his street album “Story to tell” a recount of Mic growing up in Los Angeles and the ills of the music biz. In mid 2006, Mic-Rob appeared on “The Capitalists mix tape vol.1”, as an original mix tape combining original content over up and coming producers music to represent the state of hip hop today. Songs chronicled family situation, trying to make it in the Bush era, restoring a Black presence in Hip Hop, and carefully what it meant to be an emcee.
With a strong internet following Mic again went to the booth and began his new and forthcoming album “Strange” his debut studio album. In order to get the feeling he wanted Mic employed the production of C-Dash (Mystic, Aaliyah, Mista F.A.B. and Digital Underground) and Dialect (Digital Underground and Element) two of the best up and coming producers on the west coast today. Without a major backing Mic-Rob has earned himself a major look from hip hop fans alike. The album delightfully forgets the idiocracies rap music has taken in the mainstream, and simply affirms that good music is and will always be timeless.
In early 2009 Mic teamed up with crooner and former Drummer for bands “Audiovent and Under the Influence of Giants” Jamin Wilcox on smash hit “I know What You’re Doing” top the Wild top twenty countdown for three straight weeks. Also available on Itunes.
Like the golden era icons, Mic-Rob, while quietly creating his debut album, has focused on making sure their live show is well…live. Mic has performed in Sacramento and San Francisco, as well as consistent show openings in Reno for superstars like Grammy Award winning T.I., Snoop Dogg, Paul Wall, Chamillonare, Brandy, The Ying Yang Twins, Too Short, Digital Underground, Baby Bash, Biz Markie, Naughty By Nature , Mike Jones, Suga Free, Paul Wall, Chamillionare, Mista Fab, San Quinn, The Luniz, The Clipse, Fabolous, Bone Thugs in Harmony and Yukmouth to name few. With all of his endorsements and props, Mic-Rob reminds his fans that this is by no means an overnight success. Let’s just say this is an artist that’s focuses on chemistry above the popular rap expectations.
Nevada Hip Hop is nearing its peak in the end of the decade. As styles, faces and crews may change, the brotha from Reno reminds you that it is was and forever will be about the music.
On December 19th 2009 Mic’s album “Strange: The Adventures of Microphone Robinson” hit the racks with street hit’s “Be Like Me” and “Good God (a remake of Yes’s “Owner of a lonely Heart”). Reno area Dj’s Ej Luera, Brian Webb and Chris English all stamped approval on what is touted as a classic. The album earned three of Reno's Inaugural Hip Hop Awards, for his videos "O.k." and "Do It Nice" with "Best Performance".
Strange put Mic-Rob on the map creating a strong buzz from Reno all the way to Massachusetts. Mac’s stage got a little bigger, while he headlined at Houston’s Biggest club “Club Hush” and made his way to be featured attraction for Spring Break in Havasu. After almost a year removed from Strange Mic-Rob is back at it with his brand new EP CoolCatSound and it’s digital release. Shortly followed by his full-length album “Authentic”.
